This is the PowerPoint that Scott Scarborough, UT Associate VP for Finance and Administration initially presented to the Senior Leadership Team. Through the efforts of Faculty who believed this information should be seen by all, it was emailed to all the Faculty, and many of them shared this news with their students. As you may notice, it took about a month for this information to properly be released; which may be why many Administrators and Deans took the plan, announced as only being "up for discussion" as the definite course of action they were supposed to take within about a week of the Collegian article below.

A report on the "Budget Restructuring" plan proposed by Scott Scarborough, UT Associate VP for Finance and Administration, purportedly in line with UT's Strategic Plan. The basic plan for this restructuring/reallocation is that 10% be removed from each College's budget, 5% of which is put back into the College for "Strategic" programs, the other 5% being placed into a central pool for "Strategic" items, particularly research in the areas the Strategic Plan emphasizes [see the Directions document below - item III.1, on p. 9].

This is the official Strategic Plan for the entire University, authored by President Lloyd A. Jacobs, M.D., and approved by the UT Board of Trustees Mar. 19, 2007. The various editions of the document are visible at the Executive Strategic Planning Committee site.

Aug. 22nd, Main Campus Provost Rosemary Haggett sent out a memo suggesting that faculty share with students their midterm grades, to help alert flagging students and give them the best chance to turn things around. The Faculty Senate at their most recent meeting agreed that it is wise that professors do this. Participation will be voluntary.

The Opinion begins by noting that Dr. Waite is the latest in a long line of women leaders who have left UT in order to further their careers, perhaps after coming to suspect that there may not be such prospects here. On the other hand, they contend, many new prestigious positions have been granted to women, some of whom were promoted internally. They also thank Dr. Waite for her work and example.

Dr. Lee Waldenberg, Professor of Radiology, writes this Letter to the Editor to object to the portrayal of Dr. Jacobs as a top-down administrator who is unjustly impinging on "rights" of the Faculty. He argues that it is the President's job to come up with plans to make the University better, that our University is not yet all it can be, and that Faculty should really seek ways to help bring about these needed changes. Currently and in the past, student members have solely been representatives, serving to report the doings of the Board to the student body and provide input from students to the Board.
Krystal Weaver and Joseph Russell have been nominated for these positions and are awaiting recognition from the Board.

This article discusses the last meeting of the current session of the Main Campus Faculty Senate - prior to the launching of a newly elected, merged Faculty Senate overseeing the entire University. It describes many faculty's hopes for creating strong and clear communication and expectations; which will be found very refreshing to the many who feel that faculty input has not been sufficiently respected by the President and administration.

Discusses two resolutions passed by Student Government Senate in its last meeting of the semester: the first resolution requesting that President Jacobs, like faculty, offer three weekly office hours where students can set an appointment and disucuss their ideas or concerns with him, as a measure of student centeredness.
And one expressing disapproval of any strict deadlines, such as the July 1st deadline for the restructuring of the College of Arts and Sciences.

BUT, the Collegian also bemoans the fact that Dr. Jacobs, though a bit ruffled, remained professional and calm, while students increasingly got out of hand. They urge more students to participate, AND to remain calm and professional, so as to prove they deserve and desire a meaningful say in University matters.

This writer agrees with the sentiment of the petition, and encourages all people to get involved and make sure their voices are heard, so that Dr. Jacobs will understand the ways in which he has misinterpreted Chancellor Fingerhut's strategic plan for the University System of Ohio, and can properly adjust his plans for UT.

In this well-circulated piece by Religious Studies Chair Richard Gaillardetz, the author presents an alternative key-value for the University that considers students as a little more than consumers and the University as more than a profit-driven business [which, as a non-profit simply uses its greater income to provide a greater number of 'goods and services'].
Domestic partner health-care benefits to extend to Health Science Campus July 15, 2008
Finally, Domestic Partner Benefits (so that the spouses of employees can be covered on the employee insurance, regardless of their sexual orientation) have been extended to those on the Health Science Campus, though a protracted struggle brought them about on the Main Campus in 2005 (prior to the Merger).

Ed Caroll, a May '08 graduate with a B.A. in Communications, suggests that those Arts and Sciences students who dislike what Dr. Jacobs is doing should do as he does, and transfer to another university.
